This is just a short list of some things that I wish I had more time to seriously think about/discuss/research.
- Mothers who breastfeed their children until their children decide they don't want it anymore. Watched a brief clip from some documentary about a mom who is still nursing her 8-year old. And her daughters are obsessed with her breasts - always drawing pictures, having names for them, thinking that they own them. Has really got me thinking, how old is too old? Is it all relative? Watch for yourself here. (Maybe not work-friendly.)
- The pregnant man who is pregnant again. I'm sure you've all heard about it by now. I really want to devote serious time to gender studies because it confuses the crap out of me. Is gender a product of society? What if we lived in a culture that did not encourage having to be blue if you have a penis and pink if you have a vagina? How could the sexes be characterized in a "gender-neutral" society? What kind of freedom of true self could be realized if we weren't born into a world that told us how we were to be? What if we stopped prescribing feminine = woman and masculine = man?
- Incest, or "genetic sexual attraction syndrome". There was a recent BBC special on four brother/sister couples in different parts of the world. Where do we draw the line between what is acceptable and what is not? Does the tie of biology really mean that romantic love is prohibited? Yes, there are health risks in reproduction but marriage is bigger than that. Today, anyways.
So yes, many questions and absolutely no time to explore them right now.
